Bewdley's Pack Horse pub started a golf society in 1989, which now boasts 30+ members across generations and handicaps.

ABOUT

Nestled in the heart of Bewdley, sits the Packhorse pub. But within its walls lies a more recent tale – one of camaraderie and a shared love for the game. In 1989, a chance conversation amongst friends sparked the creation of the Pack Horse Golf Society, and what began as a casual group has blossomed into a vibrant community.

ABOUT

In 1989, a group of local drinkers at the Pack Horse were chatting (as you do) in a smoke filled bar (yes that was allowed then) and the subject of golf came up. Discovering that a number of them participated in the sport, they decided to start a golf society, and play a number of local courses together. From just a handful of members playing a few courses, the society grew into the well oiled organisation it is today, with a unique blend of personalities, golfing abilities and grumpiness. Over 35 years on and with a membership of over 30, the society ages range from the mid 20s to the late 80s with handicaps to match ! This year the Packhorse are playing 14 different courses where friendly banter will be exchanged, there will be laughter, tears and tantrums, but most of all friendship and fun.

OUR HISTORY

In 1989 there was the fall of the Berlin Wall. Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses caused tension between UK and Iran, while political revolutions saw the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe. Protesters in Tiananmen Square were gunned down by the military during demonstrations. Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web. The very first episode of the Simpsons aired. Most importantly, however, it was the year during which The Packhorse golf society was formed.

The Pack Horse in Bewdley dates back to the 15th century and over the years has had a variety of uses. In the early 1980s Colm O'Rourke, known throughout much of the West Midlands as "Mad O'Rourke" moved to Bewdley and opened his first pub, the Little Pack Horse, in 1982. This was the first of his 21 pubs in “The Little Pub Company” throughout the midlands.

THE FOUNDERS

Born from a pub conversation in 1989, the Packhorse Golf Society originated with a group of friends at the historic Bewdley pub. United by their love of golf, these enthusiasts forged a casual group that's grown into a thriving society.
